The data-center scale advantage rests on selling integrated, largely proprietary systems, and the danger is a broad industry movement to break those systems open. Between open-hardware standards, open interconnects, and the hyperscalers' preference¹ for designing their own disaggregated data centers, the largest buyers are pushing hard to turn Nvidia's closed, take-the-whole-rack offering into a set of interchangeable components they can source and combine as they please.

The threat is that disaggregation, if it succeeds, unbundles the very integration that makes the scale moat wide. Nvidia's systems advantage depends on the customer buying the whole machine; an industry that standardizes the interfaces between the pieces would let buyers use Nvidia only where it is irreplaceable and substitute elsewhere, shrinking the lucrative full-system sale toward a commodity component sale and reclaiming the buyers' freedom to mix vendors.

Nvidia's case is that its integrated stack simply works better and faster than a mix-and-match assembly, and that building one's own disaggregated system is costly and risky work that only the very largest buyers can justify. The open standards are still maturing, the integration genuinely adds value, and for most customers — and even most of the time for the giants — buying the working machine beats assembling one.

In the end, moderate. The push toward open hardware and disaggregation is real, backed by exactly Nvidia's biggest and most capable customers, and it aims squarely at the bundling that widens the scale moat — but the performance and simplicity of the integrated system keep it the rational choice for most, and even the disaggregators still need Nvidia for the parts that matter most. It erodes the edges of the systems sale without yet dismantling it.
