EntertainmentNarrow moat

Walt Disney (DIS) — moat facet

Entertainment's revenue grew 3.9% a year from fiscal 2021 to 2025 and its margin recovered from 3.6% to 11.0% as streaming replaced cable.

Entertainment is Disney's largest segment by revenue and its smallest by margin. In fiscal 2025 it had revenue of $42,466 million and segment operating income of $4,674 million1, an 11.0% margin2. It holds the film studios, the ABC network and cable channels other than ESPN, and the Disney+ and Hulu streaming services.

Steady growth of about 4% a year.

The segment was created in fiscal 2023, when Disney split the old Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution segment into Entertainment and Sports and restated fiscal 2021 and 20223. On that basis its revenue grew from $36,489 million in fiscal 2021 to $42,466 million in fiscal 202545, about 3.9% a year6.

Inside, the mix has turned over. Linear Networks revenue fell from $12,828 million in fiscal 2022 to $9,364 million in fiscal 2025; Direct-to-Consumer rose from $17,975 million to $24,614 million; Content Sales/Licensing and Other moved between $7,718 million and $9,048 million78. Streaming is now about 58% of the segment's revenue9.

Entertainment is paid four ways. Subscription and affiliate fees come from streaming subscribers and pay-TV distributors; advertising from the networks and streaming; content sales from cinemas, home entertainment and licensing to others; and other revenue includes the royalty allocated from Experiences for merchandise10. In fiscal 2026 Disney began reporting the segment by those revenue types instead of by business: in the third quarter subscription and affiliate fees were $7,545 million, advertising $1,625 million, content sales $1,596 million and other $579 million11.

Profitability has swung widely. Operating income was $5,196 million in fiscal 2021, $2,126 million in 2022 and $1,444 million in 2023, as streaming losses peaked, then $3,923 million and $4,674 million1213. The margin fell from 14.2% to 3.6% and recovered to 11.0%14. In the latest quarter it was 14.8%15. Under the new presentation Disney adds a supplemental SVOD line, which earned $712 million in that quarter16.

Growth is modest and comes from streaming. For the first nine months of fiscal 2026 Entertainment revenue rose 7.5% to $34,669 million and operating income 3.3% to $4,116 million1718. Disney guides to double-digit segment operating income growth for the year, excluding the 53rd week19, while warning that Moana and soft streaming advertising will weigh on the fourth quarter.

The segment is about to change shape again. From the first quarter of fiscal 2027 much of Consumer Products moves into Entertainment20, which will raise its revenue and margin without any change in the underlying business.

The segment also earns from investments. Equity in the income of investees, mostly A+E, contributed $685 million in fiscal 2023, $529 million in 2024 and $439 million in 202521, and that source ends when the A+E sale closes22.

Disney also expects programming to rise. It planned about $24 billion of content investment across Entertainment and Sports for fiscal 202623, and the plan to triple local originals on Disney+ adds to it.

The verdict on Entertainment rests on streaming replacing cable profit. A fall in the segment's operating income on the current basis in fiscal 2026, despite Disney's guidance, would show the studio and networks still shrinking faster than streaming is growing.
