The Design Ecosystem (OIP)Narrow moat

TSMC (TSM) — moat facet

The tools, IP, and libraries of the whole industry are tuned for TSMC's process first.

Around its manufacturing, TSMC has cultivated a vast design ecosystem that makes building a chip for its fabs easier, faster, and less risky than for any competitor's. Through its Open Innovation Platform and deep collaboration with the electronic-design-automation software makers1 (Cadence, Synopsys) and the intellectual-property vendors (Arm and many others), TSMC ensures that the entire toolchain a designer needs — the software, the pre-built IP blocks, the process design kits, the reference flows — is optimized and validated for TSMC's processes, and usually for TSMC's processes first. A designer choosing TSMC finds a mature, well-trodden path from concept to silicon.

The library of pre-built blocks validated on TSMC processes grew from 1,500 to more than 70,000 in fifteen years.

This ecosystem is a genuine network effect and a real switching cost. Because the overwhelming majority of leading-edge designs are done for TSMC, the tool and IP vendors invest most heavily in supporting TSMC's processes, which makes designing for TSMC easier, which draws still more designers — a self-reinforcing loop that a smaller foundry cannot match. A designer who has built their tools, flows, IP library, and institutional expertise around TSMC's ecosystem faces real friction in moving to a foundry with a thinner, less-supported ecosystem, even setting aside the process itself. The ecosystem turns TSMC from a manufacturer into a platform, and platforms with network effects are among the stickiest moats there are — the more the industry standardizes on designing for TSMC, the harder it becomes for anyone to design anywhere else.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Stable. The tool-and-IP ecosystem is deep and self-reinforcing, but it follows volume — it holds firm around TSMC's lead rather than widening independently of it.

5-nanometer share of wafer revenue
36% in 2025, from 34%

Design tools and IP are tuned to TSMC's processes first, so designs pile into its mature leading nodes. A node that keeps a large share years after launch shows how hard the ecosystem makes it to move.
