TSMC (TSM) — the future bets

Copper is the next wall, so TSMC puts light in the package this year — three years, by the rivals' own roadmaps, before Samsung.

The furthest-out bet is about light. As AI clusters scale, the copper between chips becomes the wall — power-hungry, latency-bound — and TSMC's answer is COUPE, a compact photonic engine that stacks an electrical die directly on a photonic one and enters volume production in 2026, feeding co-packaged optics into CoWoS itself1. The claimed gains are the kind that reorder architectures: several-fold better power efficiency and order-of-magnitude lower latency than pluggable optics, unveiled on the company's own symposium stage2.

When copper becomes the wall, the optics move into the package — and whoever wins AI networking would buy them here.

Strategically the move rhymes with everything else on this page: whoever wins AI networking — Broadcom's Ethernet, Nvidia's fabrics — the optics inside their packages would be manufactured here, and Samsung's competing turnkey effort trails by roughly three years on its own published roadmap. It is still the thinnest bet of the four: photonics in volume manufacturing has humbled the industry before, and the technology's revenue is a rounding error today. Watch first COUPE-equipped products actually shipping this year, and which switch and accelerator vendors design it in — adoption, not physics, is where this option gets priced.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Widening from the thinnest base on the page: from symposium curiosity to 2026 volume production while Samsung's turnkey answer targets 2029. Photonics has humbled manufacturers before, so the arrow is provisional until COUPE-equipped products actually ship at scale.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Advanced packaging, testing and masks, share of the 2026 capital budget
10-20% of US$60-64B (budget raised from US$52-56B)

COUPE is built on the packaging lines, and TSMC says it has started production and will ramp. If the packaging share of the budget stays at the bottom of the range while the leading-edge share grows, photonics is still a side project.
