Starbucks (SBUX) — threat to the moat

Sixteen consecutive dividend raises is a promise management protects ahead of everything else, which is one fewer lever in the middle of a turnaround.

The dividend is the one commitment Starbucks cannot renegotiate, and it now costs more than the company earns.

Sixteen straight raises is a promise management protects ahead of everything else, and that is one fewer lever.

The dividend is $2.48 a share annually and Starbucks has raised it every year since 2010.1 Against fiscal 2025 net earnings of $1,856.4 million, the dividend alone consumes substantially more than the accounting profit, and total shareholder returns were $2.8 billion.2

Cash flow covers it — $4,747.5 million of operating cash against $2,305.5 million of capital expenditure and $2.8 billion of returns leaves a gap of roughly $350 million, and depreciation and impairments of $2.6 billion are non-cash.3 The dividend is affordable. It is not free.

What it costs is flexibility during exactly the period the company needs it. Back to Starbucks requires labour investment, coffeehouse uplifts and restructuring; the estate needs capital; the balance sheet carries $16 billion of debt. A dividend that has been raised for sixteen consecutive years is a promise a management team will protect ahead of almost anything else, and Starbucks protected it by cutting buybacks instead — returns fell from $3.8 billion to $2.8 billion while the share count actually rose from 1,133.5 million to 1,136.9 million.4

That is the right priority and it means one fewer lever.

Watch the payout against operating cash flow. At $2.8 billion of $4.7 billion it is prudent; if cash flow falls toward $4 billion while the dividend rises again, something else gets cut.
