Nestlé and PepsiCoWide moat
Starbucks (SBUX) — moat facet
The two most profitable customer relationships Starbucks has are with Nestlé and PepsiCo, who own the distribution and hand back the margin.
Starbucks' single most valuable customer paid it seven billion dollars in 2018 and has been collecting ever since.
Nestlé is the counterparty to the Global Coffee Alliance, which licensed the rights to sell and market Starbucks products in grocery and foodservice channels in exchange for an up-front prepaid royalty of approximately $7 billion, recognised straight-line over 40 years.1 At September 2025, $5.6 billion remained in long-term deferred revenue and Starbucks recognised $176.5 million of it in the year.2
Most of Channel Development's revenue is product sales to, and royalty revenues from, Nestlé.3 That segment produced $1,871.7 million of revenue and $885.1 million of operating income — a 47.3% margin — against North America's 11.5%.4 Alongside it sits $249.6 million of income from equity investees, principally the North American Coffee Partnership with PepsiCo that makes the ready-to-drink products.5
So the two most profitable customer relationships Starbucks has are with two of the largest food and beverage companies in the world, both of which own the distribution, carry the working capital, negotiate the shelf, and hand Starbucks a margin for the use of its name.
The dependency is real and cuts one way. Nestlé decides how hard the packaged business is pushed for another thirty-two years, and Starbucks reported rather than managed the 500 basis point margin contraction in the segment this year.6
Rated wide. Watch Channel Development revenue growth excluding the fixed $176.5 million royalty — that residual is the only part that reflects what Nestlé is actually doing.
The Nestlé alliance drove the largest revenue increase in Channel Development this year, and the fixed royalty runs unchanged to 2058. Equity-investee income fell, which is the variable part.
Most of the segment's revenue is product sales to, and royalty revenues from, Nestlé under the Global Coffee Alliance, on an approximately $7bn up-front payment recognised to 2058; $249.6M of the income is equity-method income, principally the PepsiCo ready-to-drink joint venture. Two of the largest food and beverage companies in the world own the distribution, carry the working capital and hand Starbucks a margin for its name. During fiscal 2018 Starbucks licensed the rights to sell and market its products in authorized channels through the Global Coffee Alliance and received an up-front prepaid royalty from Nestlé; the up-front payment of approximately $7 billion was recorded as deferred revenue because Starbucks has continuing performance obligations to support the alliance, including providing Nestlé access to certain intellectual properties and products for future resale, and is being recognised as other revenue on a straight-line basis over the estimated economic life of the arrangement of 40 years (a term beginning in fiscal 2018 and therefore running to 2058), a ratable pattern reflecting obligations that are generally constant throughout the term. As of 28 September 2025 the current and long-term deferred revenue related to the Nestlé up-front payment was $177.0 million and $5.6 billion respectively, against $177.0 million and $5.8 billion a year earlier, and Starbucks recognised $176.5 million of prepaid royalty revenue related to Nestlé in each of fiscal 2025, 2024 and 2023.
