Olam, Itoham and the Food Ingredient StakesThin moat
Mitsubishi Corporation (8058) — moat facet
Mitsubishi's food ingredient stakes are small individually and together make the food segment less dependent on salmon.
Mitsubishi holds minority stakes in food processors and traders. It owns 14.6% of Olam, the Singapore-based agri-business, whose contribution rose from ¥0.4 billion to ¥6.3 billion1, and 40.8% of Itoham Yonekyu, the Japanese meat processor, which rose from ¥4.9 billion to ¥8.8 billion2. It holds 64.9% of Nitto Fuji Flour Milling and 95.1% of Toyo Reizo3.
In the April-June 2026 quarter equity-method profit rose partly on a gain on sale in the overseas food materials business4.
The Food Industry segment earned ¥83.3 billion in the year to March 2026, down from ¥92.4 billion5.
Mitsubishi also owns 80% of Indiana Packers, an American pork processor6, which gives the food segment a North American protein business alongside the Norwegian and Chilean salmon.
The measure is the segment's profit excluding Cermaq's one-time items. The minority stakes are small individually and together they are what makes the segment more than a salmon farmer.
Olam and Itoham contributed more; the segment's total fell slightly.
The whole food segment; growth excluding Cermaq's one-offs would show the stakes adding up.
