✦ Eighteen Million Tonnes of LNGNarrow moat
Mitsubishi Corporation (8058) — the future bets
Mitsubishi plans to grow its LNG capacity by more than a third, which requires new projects to be sanctioned soon.
Mitsubishi's equity LNG production capacity was 13 million tonnes a year in 2025, and it targets 18 million tonnes or more in the early 2030s1. Its share of the thirteen projects it holds interests in was 14.9 million tonnes of 116.5 million2.
The growth comes from new projects and expansions, and from securing the gas to feed them, which is what the Aethon acquisition does3. The company expects the Energy & Power Solution segment's underlying operating cash flow to reach ¥645.0 billion in the current year, from ¥328.3 billion4.
LNG demand growth in Asia is the premise. Japan, Korea, China and South-East Asia all import LNG, and long-term contracts for new supply are signed years before the gas flows.
The LNG growth is supported by the Aethon gas assets in the United States5 and the Montney business in Canada6, which give the company its own gas to liquefy rather than only stakes in others' projects.
The measure is the equity capacity figure. Reaching 18 million tonnes on schedule would require one or two new projects to be sanctioned in the next few years.
The target is 18 million tonnes or more in the early 2030s.
The growth plan for the energy business; new project sanctions are the milestones.
