Mitsubishi Corporation (8058) — threat to the moat

Every long LNG contract is eventually renewed at whatever the market then demands.

Long-term LNG contracts expire, and when they do they are renegotiated at the terms the market allows. Mitsubishi's portfolio includes projects of very different ages, from Brunei and Malaysia to LNG Canada1.

Projects spanning several decades, each with its own contract cycle.

If buyers shift to hub-linked pricing on renewal, the oil sensitivity2 falls and the gas sensitivity rises.

LNG spot prices during the Middle East crisis rose above US$20 per million Btu3. Buyers who experienced that volatility on spot purchases have reason to value long contracts again, which may help Mitsubishi on renewals.

The measure is the company's oil sensitivity over time. A falling figure would show the contract structure changing.
