Helena, Second in AmericaNarrow moat

Marubeni (8002) — moat facet

Helena earns the most dependable profit Marubeni has outside Japan, at a return just short of what the company says it wants.

Helena Agri-Enterprises is Marubeni's best-known foreign business and its most consistent one. Bought in 19871, it ranks second among American agricultural retailers behind Nutrien Ag Solutions2; Marubeni describes it as the country's number two agri-inputs retailer by sales3. It earned ¥37.3 billion in the year to March 20264.

Agri-inputs retail platform, adjusted net profit (¥ bn)42.0Yr to Mar 202542.0Yr to Mar 202645.0ForecastROIC 9%; Helena ranks second among U.S. ag retailers (CropLife)
Flat for two years at a 9% return, with modest growth forecast.

What Helena sells is agronomy as much as product: advice, application and credit alongside fertiliser and crop protection. That is harder to replicate than a price list, and a retailer with local agronomists and a credit relationship is not easily replaced by an online seller.

Marubeni treats it as a platform. Agri-input retail is one of its Core Strategic Platform Businesses, with adjusted net profit of ¥42.0 billion in both of the last two years, a return on invested capital of 9%, and a forecast of ¥45.0 billion5.

The platform has compounded. Marubeni's figures show agri-inputs retail growing about 10% a year from the year to March 2020 to the year to March 20266. Helena's April-June 2026 quarter, the peak of the American planting season, earned ¥18.7 billion against ¥18.2 billion7, about half of its annual profit in three months.

Fertiliser is 42% of Helena's revenue, according to CropLife8; the rest is crop protection, seed, application services and agronomy. That mix is what keeps it from being a commodity distributor.

The measure is that 9% return. A retailer earning under its parent's own 10% ambition for non-resource businesses is a good business that is not yet a great investment.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Adjusted profit was ¥42.0 billion in both of the last two years and the company forecasts ¥45.0 billion; steady, not widening.

Agri-inputs retail platform adjusted net profit and ROIC
¥42.0bn and 9%, year to March 2026

Held flat for two years; a return above 10% would meet the company's own non-resource target.
