A Fifth of Japan's GrainNarrow moat
Marubeni (8002) — moat facet
Handling a fifth of Japan's grain gives Marubeni a place in the food supply that pays little in calm years and matters in bad ones.
Marubeni says its share of Japan's grain and oilseed imports is about 20%1. That share rests on physical assets as well as relationships: it owns 78.4% of Pacific Grain Terminal and 60% of Marubeni Nisshin Feed2, and holds 16.9% of Nisshin OilliO, whose contribution rose from ¥2.1 billion to ¥4.1 billion3.
The advantage is that a Japanese miller or feed maker buying from Marubeni is buying reliability of supply into a country that imports most of its grain. That is worth something in a disruption and little in a calm year, which is why the profits here are small.
The weakness is the American end. Columbia Grain International, the export elevator business, went from ¥1.8 billion of profit to a loss of ¥0.3 billion4.
The processing stakes extend beyond oilseeds. Marubeni holds 15.3% of S Foods and 75.6% of Yamaboshiya, a confectionery wholesaler whose contribution rose from ¥2.8 billion to ¥2.9 billion5. Each is a customer for the grain and ingredients Marubeni imports, which is how a trading house turns a supply position into a margin at several points in the chain.
The measure is the share itself. If it falls well below a fifth, the scale that justifies the logistics assets is going with it.
The import share is steady at about a fifth; the American origination end lost money in the latest year.
The scale behind the terminals and feed mills; a drop would weaken the case for owning the logistics.
