✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat
Marubeni (8002) — the future bets
Marubeni's growth over the next three years is mostly copper from one expansion, plus smaller platforms that have to grow several-fold.
Marubeni's GC2027 plan sets targets for the year to March 2028: net profit above ¥620.0 billion, core operating cash flow of ¥2,000 billion over three years and ROE of 15%1. In August 2026 it raised the investment limit to ¥1,950 billion and planned shareholder returns to ¥900 billion2. Four bets carry most of the growth.
The largest is copper. The Centinela expansion is scheduled for completion in 2027 and would take equity production capacity to about 200,000 tonnes a year3, from about 160,0004. The fastest-growing is pharmaceutical sales, built from Sumitomo Pharma's Asian business, whose profit rose from ¥2.0 billion to ¥5.0 billion with ¥10.0 billion forecast5. The one with the clearest precedent is agri-input retail in Brazil, where Adubos Real, 80% owned, earned ¥3.7 billion6. The most ambitious is a market value target: Marubeni reached ¥10 trillion on 10 February 2026 and says it aims over the long term to rank among the global top 100, which at March 2026 took about ¥26 trillion7.
The market has doubts. The shares are 23% below their 52-week high and the market value is ¥8.09 trillion8, back below the ¥10 trillion milestone.
The company also names what it will stop doing. Its plan counts on ¥600 billion of divestments over three years9, and it describes a divestment pipeline of over ¥500.0 billion alongside a new investment pipeline of over ¥3.0 trillion10. The future bets are funded partly by exiting businesses whose growth has slowed.
The measure is net profit against the GC2027 target. Guidance of ¥580.0 billion for the year to March 202711 leaves ¥40 billion to find in the final year.
Investment capacity was raised and the copper expansion is on schedule for 2027; pharmaceuticals doubled.
The plan needs about ¥40 billion more in its final year; guidance missed would put the target out of reach.
