✦ Helena's Model in BrazilThin moat

Marubeni (8002) — the future bets

Adubos Real is Helena's model applied to Brazil, at a tenth of the size.

Marubeni is trying to repeat Helena in Brazil. Adubos Real, a Brazilian agri-inputs business in which it holds 80%, sells agricultural materials and services1 and earned ¥3.7 billion in the year to March 2026, up from ¥3.5 billion2. Marubeni entered it in 20193.

The Brazilian retailer is a tenth of the American one.

Brazil is one of the largest and fastest-growing farm markets in the world, and its farm retail is fragmented, which is what made the American market attractive to Helena decades ago. The agri-inputs retail platform as a whole targets ¥45.0 billion of profit for the year to March 20274.

The gap is large: Adubos Real earns a tenth of what Helena earns.

Brazil is one of several places Marubeni applies a model it already owns. It also holds 49% of Santher, a Brazilian maker of hygiene products, and the Cia. Iguaçu instant coffee business5. Its gross exposure to Brazil was ¥203.2 billion at March 20266.

The measure is Adubos Real's profit growth. The American model took decades; if Brazil grows at the current pace, it will too.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Profit rose slightly; the platform forecast grows.

Adubos Real net profit
¥3.7bn against ¥3.5bn

The Brazilian version of Helena; growth well above this pace would show the model travels.
