◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Kioxia Holdings (285A) — the variant view

Twenty times earnings on the best year in the company's history, 53 percent below the June high, and about six times the run rate it has already guided -- the multiple is a forecast, not an oversight.

Kioxia trades at about ¥54,570, roughly 22 times trailing earnings, having reached ¥112,700 on 22 June 20261. The best results in the company's history have been accompanied by a halving of the share price.

In memory a low multiple on record earnings is a forecast, not an oversight.

That is not the market failing to read the accounts. It is the market pricing the price of flash in 2028, which is the only thing that has ever mattered to a memory valuation. Memory multiples move counter-cyclically — low at the top, when earnings are peaking and about to fall; high at the bottom, when they are negative. A 22-times multiple on record earnings is a forecast, not a bargain, and the forecast is that these earnings do not persist.

The forward arithmetic makes the point sharper. Kioxia guided the September quarter to ¥2,390.0 billion of revenue and ¥1,900.0 billion of non-GAAP operating profit2. Annualise the first half at that pace and the year to March 2027 lands near ¥9 trillion of revenue, which at recent margins would put the shares on roughly six times forward earnings. The market is declining to capitalise those earnings at all.

Two things are arguably under-weighted. The balance sheet is unrecognisable — net cash, investment grade, ¥407.5 billion of loans repaid3 — which means the next downturn costs shareholders profits rather than existence. And the mix has genuinely changed: data centre and enterprise is more than 60% of drive revenue4, a customer base with different behaviour from the phone market that used to set the cycle.

The number that decides which reading is right is gross margin over the next eight quarters. It was 80% in June 20265 and negative in the year to March 2024.
