Kioxia Holdings (285A) — threat to the moat
Everything differentiated about Kioxia's direction was announced in June 2026; the quarter that followed was explained by prices rising seventy percent.
Everything genuinely differentiated about Kioxia's product direction is still ahead of it.
The AI-inference portfolio set out at the 2 June 2026 investor day — the high-bandwidth line for key-value cache, the high-performance line for retrieval serving, the 245-terabyte capacity drive, the Nvidia platform alignments1 — is a roadmap. Tenth-generation BiCS FLASH was due to begin sample shipments in the summer of 20262. None of it explains the June quarter, which was explained by a 70% rise in average selling prices3.
That distinction matters because the two stories imply different companies. One is a commodity producer having an extraordinary year. The other is a supplier building parts that get designed into systems. The results so far are entirely the first.
The reason to take the second seriously is that the customers are already there: data-centre and enterprise drives were over 60% of SSD revenue in the June quarter4, so the products are being aimed at buyers Kioxia has rather than buyers it hopes for.
The number to watch is the medium-term target Kioxia set for itself — data centre and enterprise above 60% of total sales5 — and, more usefully, whether the drives designed for inference show up as a disclosed category at all. A roadmap that never becomes a reported line is a roadmap.
