Kioxia Holdings (285A) — threat to the moat

BBB− is the bottom rung of investment grade, awarded on a balance sheet transformed by the price of flash rather than by anything structural.

The upgrade is real and it is also the most cyclically-timed piece of good news in the file.

The improvement was manufactured by the price of flash, not by the company.

S&P and Fitch moved Kioxia to BBB− in May 20261, the bottom step of investment grade, on a balance sheet transformed by three quarters of extraordinary pricing. The agencies are not wrong — net debt to equity did fall from 1.26 times to net cash2 — but the improvement was manufactured by the price of flash rather than by anything structural about the company.

Run the same business at the prices of March 2024 and the metrics reverse quickly. Kioxia has one product, a fixed cost base, and no other division to smooth the result.

What is genuinely durable is the debt that was actually repaid: ¥407.5 billion of senior loans are gone3, and that does not come back when prices fall.

The pressure point is the ¥800 billion buyback authorised in August 20264 and roughly ¥470 billion a year of planned capital spending5, both of which spend the windfall. The question is how much of it is still on the balance sheet when the cycle turns.

Watch the cash balance against the buyback's progress. Repaying debt is permanent; buying shares at ¥54,570 is a judgement.
