Kioxia Holdings (285A) — moat facet
One revenue line nearly tripled in two years, one roughly doubled and one did not move -- and the one that tripled is sold to buyers who qualify rather than quote.
The clearest number in Kioxia's disclosure is the one that shows what kind of company it is becoming.
Revenue by application, in the years to March 2024, 2025 and 2026: SSD and storage went ¥516,361 million → ¥991,147 million → ¥1,362,638 million. Smart devices went ¥374,293 million → ¥501,142 million → ¥759,978 million. Everything else — retail cards, USB drives, and sales to Sandisk through the manufacturing joint ventures — went ¥185,930 million → ¥214,171 million → ¥215,012 million1.
One line nearly tripled. One roughly doubled. One did not move at all.
By the June 2026 quarter drives were 66% of sales2, and the direction is deliberate: Kioxia's stated medium-term aim is for data centre and enterprise to exceed 60% of total revenue3.
Why it matters is that a drive and a chip are sold differently. A phone maker buys flash by the gigabyte against a benchmark price. A data-centre operator qualifies a drive into a platform, validates it against a workload, and then buys it for the life of that platform. The second relationship is slower to win and much slower to lose.
The number to watch is the SSD share of revenue against the SSD share of gross profit. If the mix shift is not also a margin shift, Kioxia has changed what it ships and not what it earns.
One revenue line nearly tripled while the retail and joint-venture line did not move at all. The mix shift is the clearest trend in the disclosure.
Smart devices went ¥374bn → ¥501bn → ¥760bn over the same period and everything else stood still at about ¥215bn. One line nearly tripled, one roughly doubled, one did not move. The number that would settle it is SSD share of gross profit, which is not disclosed.
