✦ The Mistral WagerThin moat

ASML (ASML) — the future bets

€1.3 billion for eleven percent of a French AI lab — judged not as venture arithmetic but as whether ASML ships better machines because of it.

In September 2025 ASML did the least ASML-like thing in its history: it put €1.3 billion into Mistral, the French AI lab, anchoring a €1.7 billion round that roughly doubled Mistral's valuation to about €11.7 billion and made the toolmaker its largest shareholder at roughly 11%1. The official logic is a strategic partnership — Mistral's models applied across ASML's products, R&D and operations, with CFO Roger Dassen taking a seat on Mistral's strategic committee2 — and the unofficial logic is legible from Brussels: Europe's two technology champions binding themselves together so that neither AI nor the machines it runs on are entirely American or Chinese.

About six weeks of revenue for the largest seat at Europe's AI table — priced as an option, defensible only if the machines get better.

Read as engineering, the bet is more serious than it looks. Computational lithography — the mathematics that corrects what physics distorts at 13.5 nanometers — is already one of ASML's deepest disciplines, and frontier models applied to it could compound the very holistic-lithography edge rivals cannot replicate. Read as capital allocation, it is an option: €1.3 billion is about a month and a half of ASML's revenue, bought at a moment when Nvidia joined the same round.

Judge it accordingly. The venture mark — Mistral's next valuation — is the noisy signal; the real test is whether ASML ships measurably better machines because of the partnership, and whether Europe's sovereignty premium ever pays a commercial dividend. The falsifier is quiet: a partnership page that never produces a product line.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

The stake is bought, the committee seat filled, and the collaboration begun — but a partnership's value shows up in shipped machines, not announcements, and none of that can be observed yet. Holding steady until computational-lithography gains attributable to Mistral's models appear in product specifications, or conspicuously fail to.

Mostly the Mistral stake (11.1% fully diluted). A writedown would be the first sign the bet is not working.
