Two Hundred and Eighty Million People a WeekWide moat
Walmart (WMT) — moat facet
A search engine sees more people; it does not see them buy.
Walmart opens its annual report by telling you the number that matters most about it: approximately 280 million customers a week, across more than 10,900 stores in 19 countries and the company's apps1.
There is no equivalent figure anywhere else in this collection. It is roughly a thirtieth of the human race, every seven days, and it is the raw material for everything Walmart has built on top of retailing. The advertising business exists because Walmart Connect reaches more than 150 million weekly customers in the United States alone2. The marketplace exists because sellers want access to that traffic. The data that prices the shelf, plans the assortment and routes the trucks is generated by those visits.
The frequency is what distinguishes it from a large audience elsewhere. A search engine sees more people; it does not see them buy. Walmart observes the completed transaction — what was actually purchased, at what price, by a household it can recognise across visits — which is why the advertising sold against it converts at rates a media network cannot match.
What the number does not tell you is loyalty. A visit is not a relationship, and Walmart has historically had very little to bind the customer beyond price and proximity. That is precisely the gap Walmart+ is meant to close, and the reason Costco's renewal rate is a more valuable statistic than Walmart's footfall.
Comparable transactions are the honest version. At Walmart U.S. they rose 1.5% excluding fuel in the June 2026 quarter while average ticket rose 1.1%3. Growth led by transactions rather than by ticket is growth in the number of people coming in — which is the version that keeps the 280 million rising.
The audience is growing and, more importantly, it is becoming monetisable in ways it was not. Walmart Connect reaches more than 150 million weekly American customers and the advertising sold against them grew 38% in the June quarter, which turns footfall from a statistic into a revenue line.
Across more than 10,900 stores in 19 countries and the company's apps. It is the raw material for the advertising, marketplace and data businesses. Watch comparable transactions rather than the count, which Walmart does not audit: they rose 1.5% excluding fuel in the June 2026 quarter.
