✦ The Forty Billion Dollar ArithmeticNarrow moat
Qualcomm (QCOM) — the future bets
Nearly tripling in three years — arithmetic that works only if a 61% growth rate holds for three more.
Forty billion dollars by fiscal 2029, from a business currently running at about fourteen.
Qualcomm doubled its fiscal 2029 non-handset revenue target to $40 billion in July 2026 — announced in the same quarter it told investors Apple-related revenue would fall roughly 50% between the September and December quarters.1 Setting a bigger target on the day you disclose a bigger hole is either confidence or choreography, and the way to tell is the arithmetic.
Non-handset revenue in the June 2026 quarter was automotive $1,588 million plus IoT $1,830 million, or $3.4 billion — roughly $14 billion annualised.2 Reaching $40 billion by fiscal 2029 requires it to nearly triple in three years, a compound rate around 42%.
Automotive is growing at 61% and IoT at 9%. If both held those rates exactly, the total would reach roughly $34 billion by 2029 — close, and dependent on automotive not decelerating from a rate it has already sustained for two years.
The rest has to come from the PC and the data centre, where Qualcomm has no disclosed revenue and faces incumbents with everything.
That is the bet, stated plainly. It is not implausible; it is tight, and it has no margin for the automotive line slowing. The number is quarterly non-handset revenue against $10 billion, which is what a $40 billion run rate looks like.
The target doubled and the base did not. Non-handset revenue is running near $14 billion annualised against a $40 billion goal three years out — a bigger ambition against unchanged arithmetic.
Automotive $1,588M plus IoT $1,830M in the June 2026 quarter, against a $40bn fiscal 2029 target. That requires a compound rate near 42%. Automotive is growing at 61% and IoT at 9%; if both held exactly, the total reaches roughly $34bn by 2029 — close, tight, and with no allowance for automotive decelerating from a rate it has sustained for two years.
- ReportedQualcomm doubled its fiscal 2029 non-handset revenue target to $40 billion in July 2026 — announced in the same quarter it told investors Apple-related revenue would fall roughly 50% between the September and December quarters.Coverage of Qualcomm's third-quarter fiscal 2026 results, July 2026 — revenue of $9.9 billion and non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.21, meeting the high end of revenue guidance and short of consensus on earnings. QCT handset revenue of $5.09 billion declined 20% year over year on industry-wide memory supply constraints, higher input costs affecting device pricing and demand, and inventory adjustments at major OEMs; automotive revenue of $1.59 billion rose 61% and IoT of $1.83 billion rose 9%. Management said a sharper-than-expected reduction in Apple modem-related sales contributed to a lighter fourth-quarter outlook, with Apple-related revenues expected to fall by approximately 50% between the September and December quarters, and doubled the fiscal 2029 non-handset revenue target to $40 billion. Fourth-quarter guidance was $9.7-10.5 billion of revenue and $2.05-2.25 of non-GAAP diluted EPS, both below consensus near $10.02 billion and $2.36. — Q3 FY2026 · publ. 2026-07-30 · source ↗
