⚠ The Price-Hike CeilingLow threat

Microsoft (MSFT) — threat to the moat

The grip guarantees the renewal, not the upsell — customers who can't leave can still refuse the premium.

The subscription is a wonderful annuity, but an annuity tempts its owner to keep raising the rent, and there is a ceiling to how far that can go. Microsoft has lifted Microsoft 365 prices, nudged customers toward pricier tiers, and now layers Copilot AI add-ons at a substantial premium per seat1 on top of the base subscription. Each increase is easy in isolation, but they stack, and at some point the cumulative bill invites exactly the scrutiny the smooth annuity was meant to avoid.

The ceiling has not been reached, but the way it was tested is instructive: growth more than doubled in the year a price rise landed on a consumer base.

The danger is that price increases, unlike the underlying grip, are genuinely resistible. A customer cannot easily leave Office, but it can decline the AI upsell, refuse the premium tier, cut seats to the minimum, and slow-walk the expansion Microsoft is counting on for growth. The switching cost protects the base subscription; it does not oblige the customer to buy every new premium layered on top.

The answer is that where the added value is real — and genuine productivity gains from AI can be — the premium is easier to justify than to refuse, and it prices with long experience of exactly how much the market will bear. The base subscription remains close to non-negotiable, so even resisted upsells leave the core annuity intact.

Low-to-moderate, then. The grip guarantees the renewal but not the upsell, and there is a real ceiling on how much premium can be stacked before customers ration their spend — which caps the pace of growth from price rather than threatening the annuity itself. The floor is very solid; it is the ceiling that is in question.
