✦ La Beauté Louis VuittonNarrow moat

LVMH (MC) — the future bets

Vuitton lipstick at double Hermès prices is beauty as hard luxury — the mightiest brand meeting customers decades before their first handbag.

In the fall of 2025 Louis Vuitton did the thing beauty executives had gamed out for years: it entered their industry. La Beauté Louis Vuitton launched with Dame Pat McGrath — the most decorated makeup artist alive — as creative director: 55 lipstick shades, ten balms and eight eye palettes, cases designed by Konstantin Grcic, rolled out in China on August 20 and globally from August 291. The pricing announced the strategy: lipsticks around $160 and palettes at $250 — roughly double Hermès's beauty prices — with refillable cases softening the entry at $692. This is beauty as hard luxury, not as a volume funnel.

The business group a new Louis Vuitton beauty line joins shrank 4% reported and did not grow organically.

The prize is structural. Perfumes & Cosmetics is LVMH's fourth-largest business at €8.1 billion, built on Dior and Guerlain; beauty is how a luxury brand meets customers decades before their first handbag, and it carries software-like margins on repeat purchases. Vuitton — analysts' estimates put the maison near €20 billion by itself — has never had an entry-level product that renews monthly. Now it does.

The risk is the oldest one in luxury: ubiquity. Beauty is the category where brands dilute fastest — counters everywhere, discounting endemic — which is why Vuitton sells La Beauté only through its own stores and site, distribution as scarcity. Watch three tells through 2027: sell-through and restock cadence on the hero lipsticks, whether distribution stays captive or creeps into department stores, and whether fragrance-style extensions follow. Sold out at $160 is brand-building; marked down anywhere is brand-spending.

Moat trajectory: Widening

The launch achieved the only outcome that matters at this stage: scarcity at full price, in captive distribution, with the category's most celebrated artist as its face. Each sold-out restock widens the beachhead into an €8B division built on Dior and Guerlain. The direction reverses the day distribution creeps or a markdown appears anywhere on earth.

A new Louis Vuitton beauty line has to show up somewhere; so far the business group it joins is not growing.
