The Installed Base & Services AnnuityNarrow moat
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) — moat facet
The least glamorous part of Vertiv is the most moat-like: recurring, high-margin service revenue that never comes out of a running data center and compounds with every box sold.
The most moat-like part of Vertiv's business is the least glamorous: the installed base of equipment already bolted into the world's data centers, and the recurring stream of service revenue that rides on top of it. This is the part of the company that behaves least like a cyclical hardware maker and most like an annuity. Once Vertiv's power and cooling systems are installed in a live, mission-critical facility, they do not come out — you cannot rip the cooling out of a running data center — and for years afterward they need servicing, monitoring, spare parts, preventive maintenance, and eventual upgrades. That recurring, high-margin service business, compounding on an ever-larger installed base, is the sturdiest and most defensible element of the whole franchise.
The economics are attractive in exactly the ways hardware economics are not. Service revenue is recurring and predictable rather than lumpy and project-driven; it carries higher margins than the equipment itself; and it is defended by real switching costs — the customer's infrastructure is Vertiv equipment, the service contracts and relationships are in place, and the downside of a lapse in service on mission-critical power and cooling is catastrophic, so customers renew. Every piece of equipment Vertiv sells today seeds years of future service revenue, which means the current boom in equipment sales is also building a much larger annuity for the future — a compounding dynamic that the market, focused on the exciting hardware growth, can underappreciate.
The annuity is defended not just by switching costs but by the field-service network itself. Servicing power and cooling infrastructure across the world requires a large organization of trained field technicians, deep product knowledge, spare-parts logistics, and the trust that comes from a proven reliability record. Building that coverage is slow and expensive, and it is a barrier that protects the incumbent servicer of a given installed base. The monitoring and digital-services layer strengthens it further, turning reactive maintenance into predictive, contract-based service and binding the customer's operations more tightly to Vertiv.
Even this stays a narrow moat, for reasons the threats develop. Service can be insourced by the most capable customers or captured by independent third-party maintenance firms who service equipment they did not sell, often at lower cost. And an installed base is a mixed blessing: much of today's base is older, air-cooled, traditional equipment, and as the world shifts to new AI-era, liquid-cooled architectures, some of that legacy base matters less. Still, of all Vertiv's advantages, the installed-base services annuity is the one that behaves most like a true, durable, compounding moat — recurring, high-margin, switching-cost-protected revenue that grows with every sale — and it is the ballast — a ~$2B-plus service stream on a growing installed base1 — that steadies an otherwise cyclical, competitive business.
Widening — the sturdiest, most moat-like part, and it's compounding. Every unit of equipment shipped in the boom seeds years of recurring, high-margin, switching-cost-protected service revenue, and the installed base is growing at an unprecedented rate. In-sourcing and third-party maintenance keep it narrow.
