⚠ Waymo Proves Another PathModerate threat

Tesla's software-and-data thesis assumes its approach — camera-only vision, learning from a massive fleet, aiming for generalized autonomy — is the path to self-driving. Waymo has cast real doubt on that by achieving something Tesla has not: fully driverless robotaxis operating commercially¹ at scale in multiple cities, using lidar, detailed maps, and a geofenced approach Tesla long derided. That a well-funded rival reached driverless operation by a different route is a genuine challenge to the premise underlying Tesla's entire software edge.

The danger is twofold. First, if Waymo's method is the one that works reliably, Tesla's fleet-data advantage may prove less decisive than assumed, and Tesla could find itself behind in the very race its valuation says it leads. Second, even if Tesla's generalized approach eventually wins, Waymo and others are building robotaxi businesses now, capturing early markets, partnerships, and regulatory goodwill while Tesla's service remains small. Being first to real driverless operation has value Tesla is currently ceding.

Tesla's rejoinder is that Waymo's geofenced, sensor-heavy, expensively-mapped model does not scale to go-anywhere autonomy the way Tesla's vision-and-data approach is meant to, and that Tesla's cost and fleet advantages win the mass market. That is a serious argument and may be right. But an owner should recognize that a credible competitor has already achieved at scale what Tesla still promises, that this undercuts the uniqueness of Tesla's data moat, and that the autonomy race has more than one plausible winner.
