Over-the-air updates were a genuine Tesla pioneer advantage, and they are steadily becoming ordinary. The legacy automakers have scrambled to build the capability, and the software-savvy Chinese makers treat it as a given; what was once a striking Tesla differentiator is now an expected feature across new electric vehicles. As the industry catches up, the competitive edge from simply being able to update a car over the air fades toward table stakes.

The deeper issue is that the strategic promise of over-the-air updates — a lucrative stream of software and feature sales layered on the hardware — has only partly materialized. The paid upgrades Tesla sells are real but modest next to the car business, and the single feature valuable enough to transform the economics, full self-driving, remains unproven and endlessly deferred. Without a killer software product to sell, the ability to deliver updates is a nice operational tool rather than the profit engine the bull case imagines.

Tesla retains a genuine lead in the sophistication and integration of its vehicle software, and its head start is real. But an owner should recognize that the mere capability to update over the air no longer distinguishes Tesla much, that rivals have closed most of the gap, and that the software-revenue prize this capability was meant to unlock still waits on the autonomy breakthrough that has proven so much harder to deliver than to promise — 'next year' since the mid-2010s¹.
