✦ Beverages: What CosMc's Left BehindNarrow moat

McDonald's (MCD) — the future bets

The spinoff died and its drinks survived it — a beverage menu that inherits 13,000 drive-thrus instead of having to build traffic of its own.

In 2023 McDonald's launched CosMc's, a small chain of beverage-led stores meant to attack the Starbucks and Dutch Bros afternoon. By 2025 every CosMc's location was shut. The interesting part is what happened next: the drinks survived their restaurant. After testing in roughly 500 stores, McDonald's is rolling the CosMc's-derived beverages into McCafé across the United States from May 6, 2026 — refreshers, crafted sodas and, from August, energy drinks1, alongside a refreshed McCafé identity2.

The stores closed and the drinks survived them — now inheriting 13,000 restaurants instead of building traffic from scratch.

This is the failure-into-asset maneuver that large companies rarely execute well. A standalone chain must build traffic; a menu addition inherits 13,769 American restaurants3 and the country's busiest drive-thrus on day one. And beverages are the most attractive real estate on any fast-food menu — high gross margin, high attachment, and consumed in the afternoon, the daypart where McDonald's is weakest and where Starbucks, Dutch Bros and the energy-drink brands have grown fastest.

The risks are operational rather than strategic. Every new drink adds seconds to a service window measured in seconds, and complexity is the enemy franchisees complain about most; McDonald's has retreated from menu expansions before for exactly this reason. Watch beverage attachment and afternoon comparable sales through the back half of 2026, and watch drive-thru service times in the same period. If both move the right way at once, this is the cheapest new revenue stream the company has found in years; if speed degrades, the menu will quietly shrink again.

Moat trajectory: Widening

A category the company was weak in, entered through the assets it already owns — 13,000 American restaurants and the busiest drive-thrus in the country — after a 500-store test good enough to justify national rollout. High-margin, afternoon-daypart revenue arriving on existing fixed costs is the definition of widening; the constraint is service speed, not demand.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
U.S. comparable sales
+0.8% in Q2 2026, from +2.5% a year earlier

The new drinks are meant to bring customers in during the afternoon, and U.S. guest counts were negative in the quarter. Comparable sales improving as the beverages roll out would show them adding visits.
