Marvell Technology (MRVL) — threat to the moat
Bundling works on buyers who lack the expertise to unbundle; these buyers have nothing but expertise.
The portfolio argument is that Marvell can sell a customer the accelerator, the optics, the switching and the storage — and that the combination is worth more than the parts. It is a good argument to make to an enterprise buyer. Marvell's customers are not enterprise buyers.
The companies building the world's largest computers employ silicon architects who evaluate each socket independently and will happily assemble a rack from four vendors to get the best part in each position. They have the technical depth to integrate it themselves and the volume to make every supplier compete. Bundling works where the buyer lacks the expertise or the leverage to unbundle; these buyers have both in abundance. Their concentration proves it — Marvell's ten largest customers are 82% of total net revenue1, which is a small number of very capable purchasing organisations.
The portfolio still has real value, just a different kind: it funds the shared IP, and it gives Marvell more chances to be in the room. Those are worth something. They are not a premium.
The falsifier is attach rate. Watch whether customers who buy Marvell's custom silicon also buy its optics and switching. If they do, the systems argument is real. If each socket is won or lost on its own merits, the catalogue is a sales convenience and should be valued as one.
