⚠ The Controller Follows the Accelerator In-HouseModerate threat

Storage controllers are Marvell's oldest business and, in the AI build-out, an unexpectedly good one: the same customers buying accelerators need enormous quantities of storage to feed them. The August 2026 Google agreement explicitly covers storage controllers alongside inference accelerators and network interface controllers¹, which is the best possible evidence that the franchise still matters.

It is also, read differently, the warning. A hyperscaler that specifies its own storage controller has decided the part is worth customising — and a part worth customising is a part worth eventually owning. The path from 'design it for us' to 'we design it' is the same path this company has watched play out in accelerators, and the barriers are lower here: a storage controller is a smaller, better-understood problem than a custom AI chip.

The merchant half of the business faces the opposite squeeze. Controllers sold into the general drive market compete on price against a crowded field.

Watch whether storage attaches to the custom relationships or gets separated from them. Bundled with an accelerator program, it is defensible content. Bid separately against merchant suppliers, it is a commodity with Marvell's cost structure.
