CoreWeave (CRWV) — threat to the moat
Nvidia acts for Nvidia, and it invests across the whole ecosystem.
Nvidia's investment aligns its interests with CoreWeave's only so far, and an investor should not mistake a shared boom for a permanent partnership. Nvidia acts in Nvidia's interest — the health and breadth of the market for its chips — and it invests across the AI ecosystem, including in CoreWeave's customers and potentially its competitors, so its stake does not commit it to CoreWeave's exclusive success. While the boom runs and everyone prospers, the interests coincide and the backing looks like loyalty; but if conditions turn, or if Nvidia's strategic priorities shift toward other partners or toward supporting the hyperscalers' own build-outs, the alignment can loosen or reverse, and CoreWeave would find its most important backer's interests no longer neatly matching its own.
The entanglement also means the relationship could amplify a downturn. The circular flow of capital — Nvidia investing in CoreWeave, CoreWeave buying Nvidia chips, both benefiting as valuations rise — works in reverse if the cycle cools: falling GPU demand or values would hurt CoreWeave and Nvidia together, and Nvidia's support cannot be assumed to hold if its own interests are under pressure. Nvidia has strong near-term reasons to want CoreWeave to succeed, and the alignment is real and valuable today. But an investor should recognize that it is alignment of interests in a specific, favorable moment, not a binding commitment — that Nvidia is a fellow traveler whose stake reflects a shared bet rather than a guarantee, and whose enormous power over CoreWeave's fortunes (as supplier, investor, and shaper of the whole market) is a dependence that serves CoreWeave well while interests coincide and threatens it whenever they diverge — Nvidia funds CoreWeave's customers as readily as CoreWeave itself1.
