CoreWeave (CRWV) — threat to the moat
Everyone races on the same Nvidia hardware — the edge is execution, and it narrows.
CoreWeave's performance and speed advantages are real but inherently temporary, because they are an operational edge in a field where every competitor is racing to improve using largely the same underlying hardware. The hyperscalers, with far greater resources, are working specifically to match CoreWeave's cluster performance and deployment speed; other well-funded neoclouds compete on the identical axis; and because everyone builds on Nvidia's GPUs, the ceiling on performance is set by the same chips available to all. CoreWeave's edge comes from how skillfully it assembles and operates that common hardware — genuine expertise, but expertise that others can develop, hire, or buy.
The advantage of being fastest to deploy the newest chips also hinges on preferential access to those chips, which flows from CoreWeave's Nvidia relationship and is not guaranteed to persist as Nvidia balances the interests of all its customers. As the hyperscalers close the performance gap and secure their own priority allocations, the specialized speed that justifies choosing CoreWeave over a giant with an integrated platform narrows. CoreWeave retains real operational skill and a current lead, and in a fast-growing market that lead can remain valuable for some time. But an investor should recognize that a performance edge built on common hardware, defended by execution against far richer rivals who are actively closing it, is among the most perishable of advantages — a reason for CoreWeave's success so far, but not a wall that will hold high returns as the field catches up, which it is spending enormous sums to do — returns CoreWeave itself has never yet earned1.
