Amazon (AMZN) — threat to the moat

Walmart, Temu, and social commerce all fight to be the new first click.

Share of wallet is a habit, and habits can be re-pointed. The danger is that a rival captures the reflexive first click for some meaningful slice of purchases — Walmart with its own paid membership and grocery strength, Temu and1 Shein with prices low enough to be worth a special trip, TikTok and other social apps turning browsing into buying before the shopper ever thinks of Amazon at all. Each captures not a sale but a starting point, and starting points are what Amazon most needs to own.

Amazon's own shelves grew faster in the latest quarter than in any of the five before it; the default is not yet being lost.

The threat is real because the young shopper in particular does not always begin at a search box that Amazon can win. A purchase that starts inside a social feed, or with a Chinese app's push notification, may never pass through Amazon's funnel, and a default that is never invoked is a default quietly lost. Price-driven defection to ultra-cheap cross-border sellers works the same way from the other end.

What defends Amazon is the breadth and speed that rivals struggle to match across every category at once. Walmart is strong in grocery; Temu is cheap but slow; social commerce is impulsive but narrow. Amazon's claim is that it is good enough at all of it, delivered fast, that the all-purpose reflex survives even as specialists peel off particular occasions.

Moderate, and rising. No single rival threatens the whole habit, but each chips a category or a demographic from the edge, and share of wallet is exactly the kind of advantage that erodes quietly, one occasion at a time, long before it shows up as a lost customer — which is why Amazon guards the default with such relentless investment in price, selection, and speed.
