✦ Visa Direct and the Disbursement MarketNarrow moat
Visa (V) — the future bets
A push payment that arrives in seconds with a confirmation is a better product, not a cheaper one.
Visa Direct pushes money to cards, accounts and wallets, reaching approximately 12 billion endpoints through more than 90 domestic schemes and more than 60 card and wallet networks, and processed more than 12.5 billion transactions for more than 650 partners in fiscal 20251.
The opportunity is that outbound payments are a far less developed market than inbound ones. Gig payouts, insurance claims, marketplace settlements and remittances still move substantially by bank transfer, cheque and cash, and the recipient's complaint is always the same: it takes days and nobody can tell them where the money is. A push payment that arrives in seconds with a confirmation is a genuinely better product, not a marginally cheaper one.
The economics are thinner per transaction than card acceptance and the last mile frequently runs on somebody else's rail, which is why a very large transaction count attaches to a modest revenue contribution. But it is the one growth avenue that uses the network's existing reach rather than building something new, and it addresses a market that no regulator is currently trying to price at zero.
A large and growing transaction count in a market nobody is trying to price at zero, using reach the network already has.
Reach the network already has, aimed at a disbursement market still largely served by cheques and slow transfers, and one no regulator is currently trying to price at zero.
