The Revenue LinesNarrow moat

Micron Technology (MU) — moat facet

Four units selling the same two memories to different buyers: in 2023 three lost money, in 2026 all four earn over 75%.

Micron reports four business units, organised by who buys the memory rather than by what the memory is. In fiscal 2025 the Cloud Memory unit brought in $13,524 million, Mobile and Client $11,859 million, Core Data Center $7,229 million and Automotive and Embedded $4,753 million.1 All four sell the same two products, DRAM and NAND, which were 76% and 23% of fiscal 2025 revenue.23

In the bust three units lost money; at the peak all four earn over 75%.

The fiscal 2025 10-K reports these units and restates fiscal 2023 and 2024 on the same basis.4 That makes the last memory bust visible unit by unit: in fiscal 2023 three of the four lost money, and only Automotive and Embedded earned an operating profit, $680 million.5

The shortage of 2026 has lifted all four at once. In the quarter to 28 May 2026 their operating margins ran from 75% to 86%, and total revenue was $41,456 million against $9,301 million a year earlier.67 Growth ranged from 254% in Mobile and Client to 653% in Core Data Center.89

The mix has shifted toward the data center. The two data-center units were 25.7% of revenue in fiscal 2023 and 61.0% in the latest quarter.101112 The Cloud Memory unit, which sells high-bandwidth memory to all data-center customers, holds the one customer that was 17% of fiscal 2025 revenue.13

The competitive structure behind all four is argued under The Memory Oligopoly, and HBM's economics under The HBM & AI Memory Franchise. These pages take each unit as a business.

The question the four raise together is how much of today's margin is structural. The measure is the spread between the best and worst unit's operating margin: about 10 points in the latest quarter, against almost 60 points in fiscal 2023, from a 16% profit to a 43% loss.141516 When the units diverge again, the cycle has turned.

Moat trajectory: Widening

All four units grew 250-650% in the May 2026 quarter; the data-center units reached 61% of revenue.
