⚠ The Barrier Protects Rivals Too — and Micron Is SmallestModerate threat
Micron Technology (MU) — threat to the moat
The same wall shields two competitors larger than Micron.
The 'only the scaled survive' barrier is a genuine protection, but it is worth remembering that it protects all three survivors equally — and Micron is the smallest of them. Samsung, the largest memory maker and one of the world's largest companies, and SK Hynix, the HBM leader, are both bigger than Micron, with deeper resources, larger scale, and in some areas stronger positions. The barrier that keeps new entrants out does nothing to help Micron against its two established rivals; within the oligopoly, Micron competes from third place against two larger opponents who enjoy the same structural protections it does, plus the advantages of greater scale.
This matters because scale in a commodity is a durable edge: the largest makers achieve the lowest cost per bit, can outspend rivals on capacity and R&D, and can better withstand the downturns that cull the weak. As the smallest of the three, Micron must run hard simply to keep pace — matching its larger rivals' technology, capacity, and HBM roadmaps despite fewer resources — and it has less cushion if it stumbles. Micron has executed impressively and holds its own, and its scale is more than enough to remain a viable, competitive member of the oligopoly. But an investor should not imagine the barrier makes Micron dominant; it makes Micron one of three, and the smallest and most resource-constrained of the three, perpetually competing uphill against two larger companies shielded by the very same wall. The barrier guarantees the oligopoly's stability — the three incumbents took 89.7% of DRAM revenue in early 20261 — not Micron's supremacy within it.
