The Revenue LinesNarrow moat
ExxonMobil (XOM) — moat facet
Four segments ranked backwards: Energy Products is three-quarters of the revenue, Upstream two-thirds of the earnings.
ExxonMobil reports four segments, and the order in which they bring in revenue is almost the reverse of the order in which they earn it. In 2025 Energy Products sold $244,536 million, Upstream $39,389 million, Chemical Products $22,209 million and Specialty Products $17,771 million to outside customers.12
Earnings run the other way. Upstream earned $21,354 million, Energy Products $7,423 million, Specialty Products $2,857 million and Chemical Products $800 million.3 Energy Products was about 75% of external sales and 23% of segment earnings; Upstream about 12% of sales and 66% of earnings.4
The reason is that most of Upstream's oil is not sold outside the company. Non-U.S. Upstream sold $36,769 million to other ExxonMobil segments in 2025 against $13,993 million to outsiders, and the refineries resell it as fuel, where the revenue appears.5 The page ExxonMobil Is Its Own Largest Customer covers that loop.
The segments also differ in the capital they use. Upstream employed $209,934 million on average in 2025 and returned 10.2%; Specialty Products employed $8,073 million and returned 35.4%.6
The first half of 2026 changed the order of results again. Upstream earned $13,664 million, Energy Products $4,203 million, Specialty Products $1,607 million and Chemical Products $1,241 million.7
These four pages take each segment as a business: what it sells, what drove it and what it earns. The moat pages cover the arguments; these give the numbers each rests on.
The question the four raise together is how dependent the company is on one price. The measure is Upstream's share of segment earnings, 66% in 2025; below half for a full year would mean the downstream businesses carry the company, which in this cycle has happened only with a refining-margin spike.
Upstream remained the largest earner in the first half of 2026, and all four segments earned more than a year earlier.
