✦ Guyana's Next Four VesselsNarrow moat
ExxonMobil (XOM) — the future bets
The clearest growth plan in the oil industry, because it consists of a known number of boats arriving on stated dates.
The Guyana development sequence is the clearest growth plan in the oil industry, because it consists of a known number of identifiable objects arriving on stated dates.
Four vessels are producing. Yellowtail, the fourth, started up in 2025 on the ONE GUYANA floating production vessel, taking installed capacity on the Stabroek block above 900,000 barrels a day, and ramped to roughly 250,000 barrels a day within about three months1. Uaru is anticipated to start in 2026 and Whiptail in 2027, which would take capacity toward roughly 1.3 million barrels a day2. Hammerhead was funded in 2025 after regulatory approvals from the government of Guyana and is anticipated online in 2029, and a seventh development was announced in September 20253. ExxonMobil anticipates eight production vessels in operation on the block by the end of 20304.
This is most of how the company's 5.5 million barrel a day target for 2030 gets reached5, and it is the highest-return barrel in the portfolio: non-US Upstream earned 17.7 per cent on average capital employed in 2025 against 4.3 per cent for the American half6.
The execution record supports the plan. Guyana went from first oil in 2019 to four producing developments in six years, which for deepwater is close to unprecedented. Each vessel is a several-billion-dollar object built in a shipyard and towed into position, and ExxonMobil has now done it four times with the same partners and the same engineering.
The risks are the ones that attach to any single-jurisdiction concentration: fiscal terms granted by one government, a border claim by a neighbour, and a hydrocarbon column that is exceptionally good until a well says otherwise. And the ownership has changed: Chevron acquired Hess's 30 per cent in July 2025 over ExxonMobil's objection7.
Capacity against actual production is what settles it. Installed capacity above 900,000 barrels a day today and roughly 1.3 million once Whiptail arrives8; Guyana's history so far is of the vessels outperforming their nameplate, which is why the company's overall production went from 3,738 thousand oil-equivalent barrels a day in 2023 to 4,736 in 20259.
Yellowtail started in 2025, Uaru is anticipated in 2026 and Whiptail in 2027, Hammerhead is funded for 2029, and a seventh development was announced in September 2025. Capacity goes from above 900,000 barrels a day toward roughly 1.3 million. This is the most reliable growth in the company.
Uaru is anticipated in 2026 and Whiptail in 2027, taking capacity toward roughly 1.3 million barrels a day; Hammerhead was funded in 2025 for 2029. This is the most reliable growth ExxonMobil has, and it is the barrel that earns 17.7 per cent rather than 4.3.
