Nvidia: From Under Four Percent to Twenty-One in a YearThin moat
Arista Networks (ANET) — moat facet
Nvidia went from under 4% to 21.5% of data-centre Ethernet in a year without building a better switch.
Nvidia's share of the data-centre Ethernet switch market went from under 4% to roughly 21.5% in a year, in a market that itself grew almost 40% to $15.4 billion in the first quarter of 20261. That is the fastest entry into a networking market anyone has managed, and it was not achieved with better switches.
It was achieved with bundling. A customer buying an Nvidia rack is buying accelerators, interconnect, DPUs and now switching from one vendor, pre-integrated and validated together, with a single support relationship. Arista's counter — that a best-of-breed network built on EOS outperforms a bundled one and avoids lock-in — is a good argument that has to be made to a buyer who is already under enormous pressure to deploy GPUs quickly.
The scale-up market is worse. Nvidia's proprietary interconnect owns the inside of the rack, where accelerators talk to each other, and Arista's Ethernet-based answer is a 2027 opportunity rather than a current product. That is a whole market segment Arista does not yet address, growing faster than the one it leads.
Watch Arista's AI networking revenue against its own target rather than against Nvidia's share. Arista raised its 2026 AI target repeatedly and the back-end business is real; the question is not whether Arista grows but whether it holds position in a market Nvidia is entering from a position no networking company has ever had.
From under 4% to about 21.5% of data-centre Ethernet switching in a single year, in a market growing near 40%. Nvidia is not winning on switching merit — it is winning because customers buying racks of accelerators can buy the network with them, and there is no product answer to that. The scale-up market inside the rack is worse still, since Arista's Ethernet answer arrives in 2027.
In a market that grew nearly 40% to $15.4B in Q1 2026. Won by bundling switching with accelerators rather than on switching merit, and there is no engineering answer to that. Watch Arista's AI networking revenue against its own target rather than against Nvidia's share.
