The Revenue LinesWide moat
Meta Platforms (META) — moat facet
A business and a bill: the apps earned $352 billion from operations in five years, and Reality Labs spent $77 billion of it.
Meta reports two segments, and they are less two businesses than a business and a bill. The Family of Apps, which is Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the services around them, brought in $198,759 million in 2025 and earned $102,469 million from operations. Reality Labs, which makes Quest headsets and AI glasses and the software for them, brought in $2,207 million and lost $19,193 million.12 One segment is 99% of revenue; the other is where a large share of its profit goes.
Put the five years since Meta split the segments side by side and the arrangement is plain. From 2021 to 2025 the apps earned $352.1 billion from operations and Reality Labs lost $77.0 billion, so the hardware bet consumed about 22% of everything the apps made.345 The share peaked in 2022, when the loss was 32% of the apps' income because the advertising business itself had a bad year, and has fallen since to 18.7% in 2025 and 17.2% in the first half of 2026 — not because the loss shrank, but because the apps kept growing past it.6
Growth runs the same way. Family of Apps revenue compounded at about 14.5% a year from 2021 to 2025, with one down year, 2022.789 Reality Labs revenue was $2,274 million in 2021 and $2,207 million in 2025: four years, $77 billion of losses, and less revenue at the end than at the start.1011 In the June 2026 quarter the apps grew 28% and Reality Labs 16%, from a base a hundred and forty times smaller.1213
How each line is paid differs too. The apps sell attention: marketers pay, directly or through agencies and resellers, for impressions delivered or actions taken, and a smaller "other revenue" line of paid WhatsApp messaging and subscriptions reached $2,584 million in 2025.1415 Reality Labs revenue comes from delivering devices and the software and content that run on them.16
The first half of 2026 shows why the balance matters. The apps' revenue rose 31% to $116,278 million, but their operating income rose only 8%, to $50,294 million, so their margin fell from 52.5% to 43.3% as AI costs, legal charges and severance arrived.1718 Reality Labs lost $8,647 million in the same half against $8,739 million a year earlier. The bill stayed the same size; the business paying it earned less on each dollar.19
The leaves take the two segments in the order of the chart. The Family of Apps page covers the advertising machine as a line of business; its competitive defences are argued under The Moat, and the customers who buy from it under Major Clients. The Reality Labs page covers the device business as it stands; the argument for why Meta keeps paying for it, the glasses and the Neural Band, is under The Future Bets in AI Glasses & the Neural Band.
The question these pages leave open is not whether the apps can carry Reality Labs — they plainly can — but whether they can carry it and the AI build-out at once. The measure is the Reality Labs loss as a share of the apps' operating income, 17.2% in the first half of 2026: rising again would say the apps' margin is being squeezed from two directions.
The apps grew revenue 31% in the first half of 2026 while Reality Labs' loss held level, so the bet's share of the apps' income fell to 17%; but the apps' own margin fell from 52.5% to 43.3% under AI costs.
The apps pay for the hardware bet. A share rising again would mean the apps' margin is shrinking faster than the bet, with AI costs squeezing from the other side.
