The Buyer Who Starts at AllegroWide moat
Allegro (ALE) — moat facet
The most valuable thing Allegro owns is a reflex — that a Pole looking for a product opens Allegro rather than a search box.
The most valuable thing Allegro owns is the fact that a Polish shopper looking for a product opens Allegro rather than a search engine.
That behaviour is what turns 20,4 million active buyers into 378,0 million items in a quarter1 and what makes the advertising business possible at all: a merchant pays 2,1% of the value of everything sold2 to be visible to somebody who has already decided to buy something, which is a different and far more valuable audience than a person browsing the open internet.
It is also the reason the group can run Ceneo alongside the marketplace. A shopper who checks prices before buying is exercising exactly the scepticism a default is supposed to prevent, and Allegro earns 248,8 million złoty a year3 from owning the place where that check happens.
The habit is measurable in one number and Allegro publishes it: GMV per active buyer reached 3 492,4 złoty over the trailing year, up 10,4%, with the Polish figure at 4 393,5 złoty4. That is what a default looks like when it deepens — the same person, returning more often, for more of what they buy.
What a default is not is a guarantee. It survives on being the easiest option rather than the only one, and the moment a rival is equally easy the habit has nothing underneath it.
The measure is GMV per active buyer. Rising while the buyer count is flat says the default is deepening. Falling would say the habit has become a preference, and preferences get shopped around.
GMV per active buyer rose 10,4% to 3 492,4 złoty. The default is getting deeper even though it is not getting broader.
Spend per buyer is where Allegro's growth comes from; a slowdown below GMV growth would show the default weakening.
