Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) — the variant view
Record revenue and doubling data-center sales, and the stock fell anyway — the tax a triple-digit multiple charges on anything short of perfection.
📈 AMD valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →AMD's recent results show a company firing on its most important cylinder — the data center — while illustrating the peril of a valuation that has priced in perfection. For the 2025 financial year, revenue grew 34% to a record $34.6 billion1, net income more than doubled to $4.34 billion, and diluted earnings reached $2.67 a share, as the data-center and client businesses drove the gains and the AI-accelerator ramp gathered force. It was, by any ordinary standard, an excellent year — confirmation that the comeback had carried AMD into the front rank of the AI era.
The momentum accelerated into 2026. The second quarter was a record: revenue of $11.5 billion, up 50% year-over-year2, powered by a data-center segment that delivered $6.7 billion — up 107%, more than doubling — on strong demand for EPYC server processors and the ramping Instinct MI350 accelerators, with the data-center business now accounting for 58% of total company revenue. Management guided the third quarter to $12.7–13.3 billion3, implying roughly 41% growth and surpassing consensus, and pointed to further data-center acceleration in the second half on continued EPYC strength, scaling Instinct deployments, and the coming ramp of its rack-scale 'Helios' systems. The AI franchise AMD has spent years building was, the numbers said, becoming real at scale.
And yet the stock fell after the report. That reaction is the single most instructive thing about the quarter, and about owning AMD at its current price. When a company trades at well over 100 times earnings, even a record quarter with data-center revenue doubling can disappoint, because the valuation has already priced in extraordinary growth — the results have to not merely be great but exceed already-euphoric expectations, and 'merely' doubling a segment can fall short of what the price demands. The after-hours decline was not a verdict on the business, which is performing superbly, but on the gap between a spectacular reality and an even more spectacular expectation.
Two honest footnotes belong in any reading of these numbers. First, they are boom results, concentrated in an AI capital-spending cycle that has never been tested by a downturn, and increasingly dependent on a data-center segment that is now the majority of revenue — magnificent operating leverage on the way up, and concentrated exposure if the cycle turns. Second, the reported profitability, strong as it is, still sits atop a capital base swollen by the Xilinx goodwill, so the economic return on capital lags the headline growth. Read these results correctly and they tell a consistent story: AMD is executing brilliantly, its AI and server franchises are real and growing fast, and the business is firing on all cylinders — and the stock can still fall on a record quarter, because at this valuation the company is priced not for excellence but for perfection, and even doubling the data center may not be enough to clear a bar the market keeps raising.
